Ketut (Ongky) Wijana began carving stone at 10 years old and has been carving full time since he finished school at 18. He comes from a long line of stone carvers and has been carving in the traditional Balinese style for over 20 years. In the past couple of years he has been introduced to many new influences and has branched out to carve in many different styles. It is this along with the quality and individuality he puts into every piece that sets him apart from Bali's numerous carvers.
He is now splitting his time between Bali and the UK, the change in cultural influences has been a great eye-opener for him and has allowed him to study carvers from all over the UK and European mainland.
His Celtic, Art Nouveau and Pre-Raphaelite inspired works are incredibly beautiful. Since he started visiting to the UK he has been asked to carve many custom pieces, most of which have been animals, some he had never even seen before arriving in the UK. The animal carvings are so detailed and realistic, it's hard for some to believe they are carved in stone.
Much of Ongky's work has been for sites within Bali, temples, villas etc, but he has also had the opportunity to work on large-scale projects worldwide, from hotels in Taiwan to private villas in Kauai, Hawaii.
He is dedicated to his work and loves creating custom pieces. He talks to clients and sometimes sketches out designs to make sure the end results are exactly as the client has envisioned. Many people have also let him use his creativity by just giving him an idea of what they want and have been astounded by the end results.
