That depends on how they are used.
In general, computers make people more stupid. That is because people try to use them instead of thinking, rather than as an aid, an extension to thinking.

This is a growing problem.

Now - lets look at another aspect of this: computers are rather good at uncovering people's stupidity, people's inflexibility, people's inability to face their own irrationality, people's inability to focus on an issue, people's unwillingness to accept responsibility.
That makes them pretty useful, no ?
