If your site is down, unusually slow or you are seeing large traffic without a good reason you might be subject of DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. The first place to look is the traffic data in your cPanel - you can look in Latest Visitors or, better, download a compressed archive of Raw Access Logs.
