the truth is that any server can die, get hacked, become unreachable, lose data, corrupt data etc - at any moment. although very unlikely, it is a good idea to prepare for such eventuality, especially, as it is not difficult. the way you prepare is by having a backup of your site(s), NetCells server automatically backs up all sites or regular basis on most hosting accounts and you have your own backup tools in your cPanel. once you have a backup you can restore your site if something goes wrong - on the NetCells server or on any server, if that server runs cPanel that is very easy, if it does not it is somewhat more difficult. the key is to have an admin access to your domain names. the domain names records are kept on a domain registrar server - not on NetCells server. if you have the admin access to your domains all you need to do is to change the nameservers on a given domain name, to point them to any server you want (the server admin will tell you the names of those nameservers, like, ns1.netcells.net, ns2.netcells.net) - of course, you should have a working copy of your site on the server you are pointing your domains to! the process of switching server can take up to 24h to update around the world, but typically about 2-3 hours locally - a period known as propagation - that is the maximum time your site will inevitably be down in event of a catastrophic failure. you can check that you are the owner of your domain name on any WHOIS service, like ›who.is, that will also tell you where your domain records are kept, contact us if you want us to set up an admin access for you, and, in event of some catastrophic failure, as the domain's owner, you can always contact the registrar directly. accessing your Control Panel (cPanel) is explained in ›FAQ#9. |
