You certainly own your Domain Name, (strictly speaking, you own the rights to use it for the period covered by the renewal fees).

Ownership of the programming code is somewhat more complicated. There is no problem with the code written by us specifically for your purposes (once it has been payed for). However, when we build a site, it will often contain other code, either written previously by us, or available as free to share, Open Source type of software. The site may also be based on one of the freely available programming frameworks, such as CodeIgniter. Using such resources does not give you the ownership of the code. Also, your site will usually be maintained from the Netcells User Zone, which is our own software, developed over many years. General rule is that, if you decide to take your site elsewhere, you can take with you all the code physically present in your web hosting account, and continue using that code on non-exclusive basis. That code may or may not work on your new site, your data would have to be extracted from our database, transferred and re-connected by your new Developer, there would be a small fee for extracting your data, as stated in our >Terms. There is no serious alternative to the above, due to the costs involved in writing new code, as well as, the very nature of the Internet technology. |
