You should be very careful when placing your contact details, the email in particular, on the Internet.

All data placed on the Internet (openly or not) may be stored and duplicated indefinitely in ways entirely beyond your control. There is not a lot you can do about an email address abused by spammers other than to drop it, this becomes much more troublesome when phone numbers are involved, not to mention your physical address. Adding a simple EMAIL TAG to your site, as in: <a href="mailto:me@mysite.com"> email me </a> is NOT recommended - a sure way to bring you spam (unsolicited emails) once that address is picked up by the spammers' robots - this can lead to your site being blacklisted and your emails blocked. Note also that the email tag will work ( ie. open an email program on the local computer ) only as long as the email program is correctly configured on that computer ( yours, someone else's ) - when this is not the case ( in a public library, Internet cafe ) the tag will generate an error message - confusing to many users. As the last resort, if you really want to display Email address on your web site, do it as a graphic or disguise it, so it can't be read by robots, for example: "me at mysite.com", "my(at)mysite(dot)com" etc You should always use a secure FORM, which does not reveal your email address as a point of contact. Such a Form, called SecureMessage, is a standard feature of the Netcells User Zone (NUZ), and it can be connected to your personal site on our server by your Developer/Designer. If you have a Cell ( public page on Netcells.net ) you can easily link to your SecureMessage form - go to your Contact page ( click Contact on your Cell) , copy the page address and add it as a Link to your site. Note that the SecureMessage form can be customised to your liking, both in its look and, to some extend, the content. If you need more, you can add a Form function from the Business part of the User Zone, where you can define all the data fields, then change them any time you like. Once again, the above features are handled by your Developer/Designer ( charged at the usual rate ). The Netcells SecureMessage form works via Secure Connection, all data are encrypted while being sent. Once the data are entered into our database, the server automatically sends you a notification, by email ( this does not include the message received ). Therefore, not only your email address but also the content of the message remain confidential, you can also REPLY to the message while withholding your email address ( note that your REPLY is no longer secure - you should remove all sensitive data - such as passwords before sending it ). If the message received is really confidential ( contains passwords, for example ) you are advised to delete it, once read. Placing a slash '/' in front of your phone or email address in your Netcells User Zone will prevent it from being publicly displayed, while you remain reachable via the SecureMessage system. In brief, always use Netcells SecureMessage form, which can be connected to any site on our server and customised as needed, and if you do not - you have been warned ! |
