Internet works by IP addresses - sets of numbers which identify sites, those numbers are now in short supply and are usually shared by a number of web sites.

Spam, with other obnoxious and malicious activity - a big and growing problem on the Internet - is tracked back to the IP addresses, and, so, the IP addresses have a "reputation", which is monitored and continually altered by various tracking sites. if a site you share an IP address with gets hacked and starts sending spam this will cause problems to you - your emails will get blocked by some recipients. you can avoid that by having your own IP address, which identifies your and no one else's site(s) - then it is only you or your company who is responsible for that IP reputation. you will avoid your email being blocked for no reason - unless - of course, your own site gets hacked - in which case you are in big trouble! another advantage of a dedicated IP is that you can set up a secure (HTTPS) connection and a secure certificate on it. that is especially important if you have a login or a user zone and handle other people's data. in general, if you run a business it is a good idea to have a dedicated IP (and look after it). it gives more security and credibility to your online presence. |
