Biography
After many years involved in knitting with relatively conventional forms I am moving in a new direction, and my recent work is based on knitting with newspapers. I started knitting newspaper in 2004 after searching for something that I felt I could relate to more deeply. In particular it seemed to be a way to introduce a firmer point of contact with society and current issues as well as opening up a wider conceptual framework to what I was making.s.
I like the vocabulary of knitting and how it ‘meshes’ with society, so that phrases like ‘cross knitted’ seem to take on an extra thematic significance when placed within this context . I find the decay of the newspaper knitted objects especially fascinating, - how the colour and paper quality gradually declines leaving a strata of aging that mirrors the making of the object itself. |
