It is important to understand that moving your Domain Name to a different Registrar does not, by itself, result in any visible changes to your web site or email. It just changes the Name Tag - the name of authorised company that stores your Name's records, such as ownership, admin, billing contacts, nameservers.

As you will see below, transferring a Domain Name can be a headache, if you just want to put your web site on a different server this can be done easily by ›changing the nameservers. You are advised to read the ›FAQ86 before deciding to move your Name. If you are double-sure you want to move your Name away from NetCells below is information to help you with that process: 1. Am I the Owner of my Name ? - a transfer can only be requested by the registered Owner of the Name, if that is not you (but, for example, your designer or accountant is) you have no other choice than to ask this person either to approve the transfer or agree to change the contact details to yours. 2. Do I have the necessary information ? - a few things are good to know before you transfer your Name - status (valid or expired, locked or unlocked), expiry date, are contact emails valid, new nameservers. 3. Do I have a Registrar ? - your new Name management company will have to make a transfer request this will activate an email to be confirmed by the Owner of the Name. 4. Is the Name valid or expired ? - when the registration period has run out you still maintain rights to a Name for several weeks (with exception of .eu names), however the Name might not work on the Internet until renewed and probably can not be transferred. 5. Is the Name locked ? - most Names are locked to prevent an unauthorised transfer, you have to ask us to unlock the Name before transfer. 6. Do I need an Auth Code ? - some Names require a Authorisation Code - we will provide that code. 7. Is there enough time to move the Name ? - transfer can be done in minutes, depending on type of the Name and the receiving registrar, but it can also take weeks in case of problems - do not leave the transfer later than about 2 weeks before the expiry date. In most cases the process has to be Registry approved = about 9 days. 8. Are all my data transferred to my new server ? - moving your Domain Name(s) to the another company will, in most cases, terminate your business with NetCells and access to our server. All your data on our server will be destroyed, email stored on the server will be irretrievably LOST, unless backed up by you. And, of course, you will have no web site unless all data are on the new server and the nameservers on the domain name are pointing to that new server. 9. Did the Owner confirm the transfer ? - when transfer is requested a confirmation email is sent to Owner, who must respond or the request will time out. We make no charge for releasing your Domain Name, unless you require our assistance, but there may be a charge to bring it back, if that is proving difficult. |
